Looking for an option to experience sleeping in tents in a remote place in the Arctic, but not ready for a week commitment? This trip should be a perfect fit for you!
During this 3-day program, you will get summer on Svalbard in a nutshell: by the sea and on land. Our basecamp will be situated on the beach close to the coastline in a picturesque bay Skansbukta that is known for its castle-like mountain reliefs and significant historical background of hunting and mining periods of the archipelago past. Thus, you will spend overnights being surrounded by artsy landscapes and view over the fjord.
During the nighttime, you will participate in polar bear watch upon instructions provided by the guide which will make your Arctic experience even more unique.
On the first day of the trip, after we pack and prepare the equipment, we get on our speedboat and travel across Isfjord – the second largest fjord of the archipelago towards its northern area – Billefjord - remarkable by special mountain reliefs and sights holding a big part of Svalbard history. That day is dedicated to explore Billefjord by the boat and get to visit one of the signature glaciers of the area - Nordenskioldbreen. Speedboat size allows us to be more flexible and get closer to the glacier front to hear thunderstorm breathing of the ice and have a detailed overview of the ice formations, its intricate patterns and play of the colors. Besides, you will get to see and get to know about an abandoned Soviet settlement Pyramiden closed in 1998 but still having the echo of the past times.
The following two days we will spend hiking in the environs of Skansbukta. A typical day in Skansbukta starts with a delicious breakfast followed by daily excursions to different areas surrounding the bay. During these excursions, we will be able to explore mountains with fantastic views, bird cliffs and “paintings” of Svalbard geology.
On the last day of the trip, after a trekking trip, we pack, get on our speedboat and travel back to Longyearbyen.
Please kindly note that there are no prepared trails on Svalbard and the terrain is pretty much uneven with various elevation and reliefs: rocky moraines, beaches, crossing streams. Thus, having proper waterproof trekking boots above the ankle is a must for such a trip.
Weather on Svalbard tends to change quickly so that it is possible that the program gets changed and the boat trip might be moved to another day.
